It is important to create a formula that will impact long and short term performance. To do this, the formula must impact blood glucose, insulin levels and glycogen replenishment in the proper way. Carbohydrate ingestion plays a major role in these processes. We feel, that to perform optimally, the person engaged in the activity, must receive the proper amount of carbohydrates and nutrients to compete competently. The goals of this formulation are to:
- replenish key nutrients that are usually depleted during intense physical activity;
- ensure adequate water supply for optimizing various metabolic reactions during and after the physical activity;
- ensure good blood flow for nutrient delivery to various cells as well as removal of metabolic wastes;
- prevent further damage to cells and molecules by excess oxygen reactive species (free radicals).

Any physical activity such as athletism, sports, fitness workouts, etc… is basically characterized by muscular activity, increased energy production and metabolic rate, and formation of various metabolic products. As a result, there is increased energy need, formation of waste products, and internal bio-physiological adaptation of the body such as increased heart rate, sweating to adjust body temperature, and loss of electrolytes.
The formulation is enriched in effective and safe ingredients to meet the basic needs of the body during these physiological changes.
Various minerals and vitamins were added to optimize the glycolytic reactions (biochemical reactions involved in early steps of making ATP from glucose – these reactions are prevalent in sprinters and other short duration intense activities) as well as the biochemical reactions involved in Krebs cycle and the oxidative phosphorylation. The Krebs cycle and the oxidative phosphorylation reactions are the main reactions involved in producing ATP within the mitochondria. Without an adequate optimization of these reactions, endurance, stamina and performance will be severely compromised.
In order to supplement the limited reserves of glycogen in muscles, fructose and glucose were added to the formula. Both glucose and fructose were added in bio-available forms that enhance their delivery to the cells for the increased need of energy production. This will ensure quick and available ATP production for the muscles.
Fructose is a monosaccharide that is passively absorbed (i.e., does not require a biomolecule carrier or energy input) into the cells and ultimately used in the glycolytic pathway. It does not appear to induce insulin response, and thus helps maintain a steady energy and performance output.
Glucose is also a monosaccharide and is basically the main energy currency to produce ATP in many cells. In fact, all carbohydrates are ultimately broken down and/or converted into glucose. Its use in energy production is vital in muscles, brain and many other biochemical processes in the body. Contrary to fructose, glucose requires an active transport mechanism during absorption in the intestine. Additionally, glucose induces insulin response.
The careful combination of glucose and fructose in this formulation was designed to allow efficient carbohydrate supply to the athlete yet prevent any high surges of insulin that could undermine performance.
The presence of taurine in the formulation is to enhance the uptake of glucose by muscle cells, but also to promote tissue build-up. Taurine is a normal amino acid found in muscle cells. Although it is not incorporated in polypeptides, it is found in the muscle amino acid pool and its reserves are depleted during physical activities. Thus, it is important to replenish it in order to maintain homeostatic balance within muscles cells.
L-carnitine is also a normal constituent of the body. It is an amino acid derivative, and its function is to enhance uptake of fatty acids. This function of L-carnitine is very important as it helps burn the fat and produce more energy for improved performance. Along with lipase, L-carnitine makes this formulation a good and safe “fat-burner”, and will help optimize the use of fatty acids in the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production. ATP is the body’s energy currency. Uptake of the fatty acid into the mitochondria provides for their optimum ß-oxidation in the production of ATP. Beta-oxidation is a critical biochemical reaction involved in the conversion of fats into ATP production for energy.
During physical activities, there are several biochemical reactions taking place in the body resulting in the need to repair tissues, and synthesize new molecules. Most of these biosynthetic reactions will require a timely supply of amino acids to be incorporated into the various polypeptide chains. The formulation has been supplemented with key amino acids that could help support those processes during and after the activities. More specifically, Blitz contains some essential amino acids, including the branched chain amino acids (leucine, valine and isoleucine) that were shown in studies to minimize muscle catabolism and also to serve as energy fuels for muscles under certain conditions of physical activities. This approach in amino acid supplementation, not only enhances performance, but will also help in tissue repair and recovery. This is an essential benefit of Blitz.
One common side effect of any intense physical activity is the formation of reactive oxygen species often referred to as free radicals. Due to the intense oxygen intake and utilization by the mitochondria in their role as the powerhouse of the cells, there is increased formation of free radicals that could accumulate and injure various cellular components and molecules. In order to alleviate the negative effects of the excess free radicals, decaffeinated green tea extract is added to the drink formulation. Green tea has been shown to scavenge various free radicals such as superoxide, hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals, and protect lipid peroxidation as well as oxidation of proteins and nucleic acids. Another benefit that the green tea will impart is improved blood circulation.
Additional antioxidant benefit is provided by the presence of vitamin C. In addition of its antioxidant activities, vitamin C helps in the detoxification of heavy metals, as well as supporting the cardiovascular and the immune system.
One of the exclusive characteristics of this sports drink formulation is the presence of highly effective, gastrointestinal stable enzymes. The specific enzymes added in the formulation include proteases, lipase and amylase. Their contributions in the formulation are several fold:

Another consequence of physical activity is the loss of water and electrolytes via sweating. The formulation is presented in powder form to which water is added. The product is quickly dissolved and taken before, during and after the physical activities. It is suggested that the product be sipped throughout the performance. In general overdrinking during or before performance is not recommended as it may dilute plasma electrolyte concentrations and induce increased urine production.
Sodium and potassium are also added to replenish their loss via the sweat. Although the body loses water and electrolytes, that loss is tightly regulated in the body by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. That regulation limits for instance the amount of sodium that could be lost via the urine and sweat. The amounts of sodium and potassium in the drink along with the daily dietary intake help ensure that the body remains within the norms of electrolyte concentrations.
Chloride is another important electrolyte mineral necessary to life. It is vital in the production of hydrochloric acid which is important to the breakdown of proteins, absorption of metallic minerals and essential in the absorption of Vitamin B 12. Chloride assists with the maintenance of fluid levels, healthy nerve function and muscles.
Another key ingredient in the formulation of Blitz is chromium. Chromium has been shown to improve glucose tolerance by enhancing its uptake into cells. This property will optimize the body's ability to generate more energy and increase performance and stamina. Other studies have pointed to the chromium benefits in maintaining good blood vessels.
